Chatty

R has been experimenting more and more with speech, it so cool to see him branching out, trying new sounds and starting to put together more complex babytalk. He really is fantastically adorable!

First Tooth!

I saw Rutherford's first tooth today! I think he cut it a few days ago (Neddie noticed something sharp when applying some Orajel when we thought he was having some teething pain) and I spotted it today! So proud of our little man. I just saw one, so hopefully its buddy comes in soon, too - I think they're supposed to make their appearance in pairs.

Happy Boy Wakeup

Rutherford has been taking a nice long morning nap pretty consistently. I just let him go until he wakes up on his own; I know it's been a good nap when he wakes up cooing and talking and rolling around. He's all smiles when I come in to get him - when Ned is around we just about draw straws to see who's going to get to go in first and get that big gummy grin. Love this little guy!

Like Father, Like Son

Rutherford is drawn to the stacks of records we have out in the club room. They must be made of some sort of baby catnip, he goes straight for them when I put him down to play. Just like his papa :)

Seven Months, Sleep Training and Green Beans

Last week little man turned seven months old - we can't believe what a big boy he is becoming!

For a while now, we have battled sleep issues with R. He has never been a good napper and nighttime sleep has been spotty at best. Well, I finally had to do something more drastic - it got to the point where I was holding him for all of his naps (and he still wasn't sleeping very long), and then he started waking up often at night as well! My poor little boy had circles under his eyes and was grumpy when he was playing during the day :(

We started sleep training last weekend. Basically, from everything I read, we had to start putting him down in his crib for sleep drowsy (but awake). The thought is when we'd rock him to sleep and put him down, he might wake up and then be confused/upset that he was no longer being held. In essence, he needed to learn how to fall asleep on his own, in his crib. Rutherford, of course, resisted and would cry.

Instead of just letting him "cry it out," and leave him for an hour to wail by himself, I chose to stay right with him while he cried in his crib. I patted his back, sang him songs, and just generally let him know I wasn't leaving. Eventually (after about 30 minutes), he fell asleep.

Since then EVERYTHING has been different. He's been taking naps on his own, in his crib, for at least an hour (sometimes two). Previously, a 45-minute nap was a success for us. His nighttime sleep has been much improved, and he's even slept through the night once this week. He is happier, looks healthier and I'm regaining some of my sanity. He sometimes grizzles a bit when I put him down, but now doesn't cry for more than a minute or so. Unbelievable!

Sleep regression does happen, but at least we have a method that we're comfortable with that has worked. Yay for Rutherford!

In other news, last night he tried green beans for the first time! He seemed to like them OK - had several bites, but we'll try them again tonight and see. It's a beautiful day here, I think we'll go to the park after lunch!

Scootin'

A few nights ago, Neddie was playing with R and discovered that the crinkly dog treats bag was irresistible to the little guy. Notice the Star Wars theme music in the background. My boys are too funny :)

Happy Birthday, Papa :)

Today was Neddie's birthday! To celebrate, we went off on our FIRST ADULT EXCURSION since the baby was born. It's been almost seven months since Ned and I did anything together without the baby. My mom came to babysit while we went to Ocean Beach, one of our favorite neighborhoods. We scoped out some record stores, antique stores and then had some awesome fish tacos. It was just a few hours, but really nice to hang out together sans R. (Of course we missed our little man!)

I got Neddie the new Wanda Jackson/Jack White album, which we listened to a bit this morning. R has been showing less signs of teething pain, so the last few days have been much easier with him which has been really nice. He has been laughing so much!

Also, today he kinda waved "bye bye" to Grammy. He put his little arm out to mimic us, so I'd bet a real wave is not too far away - how cool s that?!

Finally, I was doing some light cleaning in my office and came across a set of Mickey Mouse ears Ned and I bought for Lucky when he was a puppy. (Haha! We are insane!) Of course, him being a dog, he never had much cause to wear them, but they fit Rutherford just fine!
